The Book: The Dressage Horse Optimized

Introducing a book that fills the gap that often exists between trainers, riders, and equine bodywork therapists when it comes to understanding how the dressage horse uses his body in performance. Learn hands-on ways we can help optimize his suppleness, flexibility, balance, and movement while easing the effects of common stressors on the musculoskeletal system—that is, make his body as perfect, effective, and pain-free as possible.

Join the creator of the Masterson Method of equine bodywork Jim Masterson, along with Masterson Method practitioner Coralie Hughes, Grand Prix dressage rider Betsy Steiner, and creator of Anatomy in Motion™ The Visible Horse Susan Harris as they clearly demonstrate steps we can take to make our horses comfortable, happy athletes for years to come.

The DVD: Dressage Movements Revealed

The creator of the Masterson Method brings you a new instructional DVD that addresses the unique expectations and demands put on the horse’s physiology as he moves up through the different levels and movements of dressage. Here you discover what goes on with the horse’s body during dressage training, enabling riders and trainers to recognize when a horse may be developing physiological issues. Specific Masterson Method bodywork techniques are shared to help riders meet the unique demands on the dressage horse.

A horse painted with skeleton and muscles by renowned author and artist Susan Harris (creator of the first “painted horse” Anatomy in Motion DVDs released in 2005), performs upper level dressage movements that exhibit extension, collection, bending, and lateral movement. Dressage rider and trainer Betsy Steiner helps demonstrate how it feels when muscle tension or lost range of motion make it difficult for an otherwise trained horse to perform the movements required of upper level dressage performers.

Author: Jim Masterson
Author Notes: Jim Masterson, Equine Massage-Bodywork Therapist for the 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014 USEF Endurance Teams, has worked on thousands of horses competing on the AA level and in FEI World Cup, Pan American, and World Equestrian Games competitions. Jim recognized early in his career that the horse exhibits certain visual, neurological responses to touch as the horse releases tension in the body. Using those responses to guide his work, he developed a system in which the horse participates in the process by showing the practitioner where tension has accumulated, precisely how much pressure is needed to release it, and when it has been released. The result is an effective method of equine body work that anyone can learn to use, that will improve performance and at the same time open new levels of communication and trust with the horse. Jim teaches his unique method to horse owners and therapists around the world.
