Author Notes: Josephine Knowles was two years old when she was given her first pony. She was breaking and schooling ponies by the time she was twelve. Soon she was training difficult animals for others and when she had passed her pony club tests she became a pony club instructor. Several jobs followed including working for a hunt, a livery and dealing yard, a girl's school where riding was part of the curriculum and an eventing establishment. During this time Josephine competed successfully in some of the first Horse Trials in Great Britain on two horses given to her as rejects. British Horse Society examinations followed and, after gaining her BHSI, she opened her own riding school. She gained her Fellowship very largely on her experience of so many different aspects of horsemanship and the great number of animals she had ridden and dealt with. Josephine lives in Northhamptonshire where she is still competing and judging; she teaches, gives demonstrations and lectures and has gained an enviable reputation for her work with young equines.
